Many times we receive a design which another illustrator has already drawn, and which has received a rejection. By the time we receive the assignment, the illustration has been copied and recopied until the line quality is poor, and we are forced to redraw the entire set of figures. (This is one of the reasons we archive all of our work. Our clients are always welcome to request our source files, so as to spare the expense of redrawing.) In addition to redrawing the figures, we needed to read and understand the objections of the USPTO, and to correct them accordingly. This file had a few inconsistencies between the various views, which we had to work out. In this case, working with the attorney and the examiner’s instructions, we turned the inconsistent line into a broken line in all views, thus avoiding adding on new matter which would have invalidated the application.
